Mauka, meaning "towards the mountains" in native Hawaiian language (my mother's heritage), was a cuvee that was a long time coming. We had always struggled to be impressed with Bordeaux varieties in Paso Robles, but when we became involved with a new vineyard in the Willow Creek District planted to Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, we knew the time had come to bring Mauka to life. Fermented entirely in new 400L French oak puncheons, Mauka is a wine that is both substantial in structure yet elegant in character. A dense nose of blackberry, woodsmoke, and creme de cassis is met with dark, penetrating palate of mocha-laced blue and black fruits, toasted marshmallow, and cedar notes.
